What is this course about?

The global nature of American classrooms requires all teachers and students to be culturally aware and sensitive to the academic and social needs of demographically heterogeneous students. Risks of ignoring these differences include ostracizing and isolating students, as well as administrative and legal issues. Self-reflection and student reflection allow you and your students to identify and overcome rigid internal beliefs about others outside the American majority culture. In this course, participants will learn how to become culturally sensitive, thereby helping their students to flourish both academically and socially. The minimum time for participant completion of this course is 30 hours over a minimum of three days. Participants must spend at least 300 minutes over three days logged in to this course to receive credit.

What is this course about?

The current focus on core academics such as mathematics and ELA often causes “secondary” subjects, such as Social Studies, to be relegated to less instructional time and materials within the school day. In this course, participants will learn to thread social studies subjects and concepts throughout the school day and across disciplines so that students gain critical exposure to and reflection upon the people in the world around them. Subjects covered include: teaching Social Studies across the curriculum, teacher collaboration, engaging students, and learning beyond assessments. The minimum time for participant completion of this course includes both enrollment time and system logged in activity time. Enrollment time is a total of three calendar days (4320 minutes) from the moment of enrollment. Activity time includes 300 minutes logged into the system. This 30-hour course uses a combination of both time requirements to maximize participation and allow time for completion of ongoing assignments and assessments. Completion certificates are restricted until both time requirements are accomplished.
